Nine Arch Bridge Railway Track Transforms into Movie Set for Indo- Lanka Film Project

October 12, 2024

An Indian film crew has taken over Sri Lanka’s iconic railway tracks for a movie shoot, temporarily halting train services on the scenic route near the Nine Arch Bridge between Ella and Demodara. The train journey from Colombo to Badulla has been disrupted, with services now running only up to Ella from October 9 to 15.

The production company, NE Commercial Group of Companies, paid Rs. 23 million to the Sri Lanka Railways Department for exclusive access, a significant investment aimed at promoting tourism. Approved by the Transport Ministry, the project seeks to showcase Sri Lanka’s breathtaking landscapes and boost tourism. However, the motivations behind India’s involvement have sparked speculation, with some questioning whether the project serves India’s interests more than Sri Lanka’s.

The collaboration occurs amidst a complex diplomatic history between the two nations, which have experienced disputes over fishing rights and controversial projects like the Adam’s Bridge and Seethusamudram Shipping Canal. The potential impact on Sri Lankan tourism remains uncertain, with concerns about how the film will portray the island’s culture and scenery, reminiscent of Hollywood movies like “Rambo” that reshaped narratives.

During the shoot, passengers must adjust their plans, as train services will be restricted to 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and a bus service will connect Ella to Bandarawela. The film prominently features the Odyssey Train, known for its stunning seven-hour journey from Colombo to Badulla. As the project unfolds, its true value in promoting Sri Lanka on the global stage will be closely watched.
