Establishment of 'Films Sri Lanka'

June 21, 2024

The Sri Lankan Cabinet has approved plans to establish “Films Sri Lanka,” a new institution aimed at boosting the local film industry by focusing on regulatory activities and facilitating a shift to digital platforms. This initiative seeks to enhance Sri Lankan cinema’s international presence. The decision came after the proposal to create the “National Film Development Commission” was discussed in April. Following extensive consultations with industry stakeholders, the name was changed to “Films Sri Lanka” to better reflect the sector’s needs and aspirations.

The new institute will replace the National Film Corporation’s business activities with regulatory functions, aiming to integrate digital platforms and expand global reach. It is expected to open up new opportunities for filmmakers, producers, distributors, and other industry professionals. The drafting of the framework for “Films Sri Lanka” will incorporate feedback from industry discussions to ensure alignment with stakeholders’ needs.
